Highlights in our litigation funding calendar are, unsurprisingly, the Harbour Lectures.
The 4th Annual Harbour Lecture will take place in London on 12th October at the Hall in Gray’s Inn from 5.30 pm. Each year Harbour invites a distinguished speaker from the Judiciary to share their views on current and future legal developments. This year, we are delighted to welcome Lord Justice Briggs who recently published his final report on the review into the structure of the Civil Courts which coincides with a programme for reform of the courts by HMCTS.
In the lecture titled “On the cusp of a civil revolution” he will consider how the combined effects of new technology, the HMCTS Reform Programme, the Civil Courts Structure Review and the renewed emphasis upon fixed recoverable costs may be about to bring about revolutionary change to civil litigation in England and Wales, on a scale not seen since 1875.
As part of Hong Kong Arbitration Week, Harbour Hong Kong will host its inaugural Harbour Lecture on 19th October with international arbitrator Neil Kaplan CBE QC SBS as its first guest speaker on “Anyone for Costs?”. The allocation of costs in arbitrations is a challenging task. Most international arbitration rules confer on the Tribunal a very wide discretion as to whether costs should be awarded, to whom and in what amount. As claims for costs get larger, this discretion becomes onerous. This lecture will shed light on the principles underlying the allocation of the costs decision process and the major trends in international commercial and treaty arbitrations. The event will be hosted in the Foreign Correspondents’ Club, 2 Lower Albert Road, Central, Hong Kong from 4.30 pm.
