Investigation of potential Uber class action in Melbourne

Australia, 21 November 2017 – The Victorian Hire Car Association (VHCA) has instructed Maurice Blackburn to investigate allegations that Uber was operating unlawfully from 2013 until midway through 2017, when new legislation came into effect. The proposed action is backed by Harbour Litigation Funding Ltd.

In many cases Uber’s entry into the market has devastating consequences for the livelihoods of existing licence holders and drivers. If the investigation reveals that Uber’s entry in the Melbourne metropolitan area involved unlawful conduct, there may be grounds for a class action to recover losses on the part the affected law-abiding taxi and hire car operators and licence holders.

Harbour Litigation Funding partners with JUSTICE

28 January 2016 – Harbour Litigation Funding has become members of JUSTICE, the law reform and human rights organisation working to strengthen the UK’s administrative, civil and criminal justice system. The JUSTICE membership includes judges, barristers, solicitors and others in the UK legal community.

Harbour’’s support for JUSTICE is a manifestation of the ethos that drives its business. Claimants working with Harbour use funding to pay their legal bills and  allows meritorious cases to be pursued without the fear that cash flow could constrain claimants’ access to justice.

Susan Dunn, Head of Litigation Funding, said: “”One of Harbour’’s functions is to improve access to justice so the work of JUSTICE is a natural fit for us.  Many of our claimants would not be able to afford their cases without our funding and it is enormously satisfying to help them pursue those cases.   Being associated with the admirable work and achievements of JUSTICE across a broad spectrum is a privilege for the Harbour team.””

Andrea Coomber, Director of JUSTICE, said: “”Harbour brings a new and welcome dimension to our corporate support group and we are delighted to have them on board.  We have much to do and need all the financial support, backing and expertise we can muster to achieve our vision that fair, accessible and efficient legal processes are available for all and that individuals’’ rights are protected.  Harbour’’s backing of our work is incredibly significant.””

JUSTICE works on an all-party basis to inform the debate, frame issues and influence decision-makers from across the political spectrum.  The Chair of the JUSTICE Council is Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws QC.  Dominic Grieve MP QC and Baroness Sarah Ludford are its Vice Chairs. Recent success includes a landmark report proposing the radical change to the civil justice system, which is now informing the reform agenda within the judiciary and HMCTS.  JUSTICE has also recently published a report on the legal framework for surveillance in the UK, a report proposing the abolition of the dock in criminal trials and a new guide to judicial review reforms in association with The Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and The Public Law Project.

In addition to financial support, Harbour will participate in JUSTICE’’s Working Parties, conferences and seminars.
